The name of green tea because the leaves of the tea shrubs do not go any fermentation or additional processing after harvest; the chlorophyll is preserved in the drink. The delicate processing techniques are thought to be among the reasons why green tea is so rich in nutrients and antioxidants — all of which may lead to a range of health benefits.

Green tea as a beverage or dietary supplement is promoted for improving mental alertness, relieving digestive symptoms and headaches, and promoting weight loss. There are different types of green tea, including dragonwell, gunpowder, matcha, and sencha. Though they vary in taste, green teas tend to have a mellow flavor.

Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that have many health benefits, which may include: improved brain function, fat loss, protecting against cancer, lowering the risk of heart disease. Green tea contains antioxidants known as polyphenols, flavonoids, fluoride, no cholesterol, no fat, no sugar, natural vitamins, and mineral. The health benefits of green tea varied and wide ranging.

Antioxidants bind harmful oxygen-containing molecules in human body called free radicals and peroxides that otherwise could damage DNA, cell membranes, and other cell membranes.

Flavonoids in green tea

Green tea contains polyphenols, which include flavanols, flavandiols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids; these compounds may account for up to 30% of the dry weight.

All teas from Camellia Sinensis leaves contain natural flavonoids. The levels of flavonoids vary among the type of tea – black, green, oolong and white. On average, the flavonoid content of black tea is approximately 180 mg per cup and in green tea, approximately 160 mg per cup.

Flavonoids are composed of a variety of health-promoting compounds and might have antioxidative, antimicrobial, and possibly anticarcinogenic, and cardioprotective effects.

Flavonoids are capable of modulating the activity of enzymes and affect the behavior of many cell systems and exerting beneficial effects on the body.

The major flavonoids of green tea are various catechins, which are found in greater amounts in green tea than in black or Oolong tea. There are four kinds of catechins mainly find in green tea: epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin-3-gallate, and EGCG.

Many of the beneficial effects of green tea are related to its catechin, particularly (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate, content. Long-term consumption of tea catechins could be beneficial against high-fat diet-induced obesity and type II diabetes and could reduce the risk of coronary disease.

Tea polyphenols, catechins and flavonols scavenge reactive oxygen species, and chelate transition metal ions in a structure‐dependent manner. These flavonoids are antioxidants by virtue of the number and arrangement of their phenolic hydroxyl groups.

Green tea and acne

Green tea leaf extract is considered one of the most powerful antioxidants in the world. It has also been shown to posses antibiotic properties due to its ability to disrupt a specific stage of the bacterial DNA replication process.

Green tea is used by the Chinese as a traditional medicine to treat many ailments including acne and to improve general well-being. But does it provide an effective herbal alternative to modern medication?

Study by researchers at the University College London, green tea has the ability to lower hormone level and correct imbalances, which have been shown to be factor in the development of acne.

Study in South Korea that by using cream containing EGCG (epigallocaetechin-3-gallate) showed a significant reduction in acne. These finding suggest that green tea which is containing EGCG could be a main treatment for acne.

Green tea has the added advantages of natural anti-bacterial properties and antioxidants, particularly epigallocaetechin-3-gallate which is 200 times more powerful than vitamin E at fighting free radicals.

Green tea may be able to contend with lipid peroxidation in acne as it contains antio0xidnas that are able to prevent local and systemic declines in superoxide dismutase and GSH activity. Green tea also helps to reduce inflammation, hormonal activity and aids in detoxification - which is all good news for acne sufferers.
