Healthy drinks of cranberry juice

Cranberry juice is a powerful drink that should be added into the diet. Medicinal properties of the cranberry have been recognized for centuries. It provides powerful antioxidant qualities.

The scientific name for cranberry plant is Vaccinium Macrocarpon. Cranberries contain 180% water and 10% carbohydrates. Among other constituents are flavonoids, anthocyanins, catechin, triterpenoids, organic acids, and a small amount of ascorbic acid. The major organic acids are citric, malic, and quinic acids, with small amounts of benzoic and glucuronic acids.

The juice of the fruit is acidic and astringent, which makes it difficult to drink at full strength. In the 1950s a more palatable preparation was produced, which diluted the neat juice with water and sweeteners.

Cranberry fruits and leaves have been used to treat a variety of medical conditions, such as wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments and liver problems in herbal medicine throughout history.

A common treatment for urinary tract infections is to drink cranberry juice. The cranberry proanthocyanidins inhibit the adhesion of Escherichia coli in the urinary tract, the bacteria responsible for these infections, thereby reducing infections.

Cranberry juice has been tried in several clinical situations, including the prevention of blocked urinary catheters, to deodorize offensive urine an to heal skin around urostomy stomans. It has been investigated for use as an anticarcinogen and antifungal agent and an antioxidants.
